Sterling silver pendant featuring a high quality golden sheen sapphire in a rose cut, as well as a rose cut chrysoprase in matrix. when held at different angles, the sapphire has a golden flash of color that streaks across its usually-chocolate colored surface. Both stones have the backs cut out of their settings; the sapphire to show more flashes of golden color, and the chryoprase to let light through so it will glow ever more vibrant shades of bright oceanic green.
Scylla and Charybdis were two hazards Odysseus came upon in ancient Greek mythology. On one side of the sea was Scylla, a fierce monster, and the other side held Charybdis, a dangerous whirlpool. The phrase "Between Scylla and Charybdis" means to be between "a rock and a hard place," so to speak.
On either side of this oceanic chrysoprase are two cast hawthorns, hand forged into a spiral, symbolizing the two hazards Odysseus and Jason faced during their hero's journey. But, hawthorns hold a protector energy, as they protect the sacred fruit of the plant they grow from. This pendant offers protection and balance as you come upon your own challenges in life. Though the skies may be dark, watch for the flashes of golden light to streak by, much like the flash of the sapphire.
The pendant is 1.5" long, and 1.5" at its widest point. It comes with an 18" oxidized sterling silver chain with handmade clasp. The darkened areas of the chain will also begin to wear away as you wear it, revealing flashes of silver against black. Overall the pendant is made to age and change, wearing into it's personality.
All cast thorns, twigs and other nature bits are collected near my home in Appalachia and cast in small batches in my home studio. These pieces of nature are immortalized in silver, their spirit imbued in the metal.
